Paint
Our paint process "speaks" quality in every step of the product! Find our step by step method outlined below:
Paint Specifications
The aircraft will be inspected upon arrival for any surface damage, or missing parts, attention will be given to the windows, flight controls and fuselage skin. If discrepancies are found after stripping of the aircraft, they will be repaired on a time and material basis or at a fixed price, upon customer’s approval.
- Protective masking materials will be applied to the aircraft windows, composites, and applicable flight controls. All openings will be sealed. The aircraft and control surfaces will be stripped using a non-chromate, non-phenolic stripper. The aircraft will be pressure washed with a mild soap and rinsed with heated water. All masking tapes and covering materials will be removed. The aircraft will be examined for excessive body filler in the fuselage/wings or any body filler in the flight controls after paint stripping; the condition will be reported if these conditions are found should extra work need to be authorized by the customer.
- The aircraft will be prepped as required to remove all paint or primer residue not removed by stripping. Composite parts will be sanded as required. Repairs will be at additional expense.
- Applicable composites such as fairings, inlet ducts and radomes, will be painted with flexible fill primer, sanded smooth, and painted with an anti-static primer, a fill coat primer will be applied and sanded smooth for the top coat application.
- Protective masking material will be applied to sensitive areas. Windows will be given extra attention with applications of two layers of paper cover (for scuff protection from the aluminum foil covering) and two aluminum foil protective layers. The aircraft will be washed with a chemical etch, scrubbed, and rinsed with fresh water. Alodine will be applied to the etched metal and left on until color change is evident. The excess alodine is rinsed off with fresh water.
- Protective masking will be applied to proper areas and the aircraft will be wiped down with MEK. Epoxy, corrosion protective, primer is applied. A polyurethane fill primer will be applied to the entire surface of areas to be painted.
- The fill primer will be sanded smooth for top coat application. The aircraft will be blown off with high-pressure dry air, wiped down with MEK, and cleaned with tack rag. Three coats of high gloss polyurethane base colors will be applied to the aircraft and the control surfaces.
- The landing gear (struts, gear doors, and wheels) will be prepped and hand sanded. A polyurethane paint will be applied. Wheel wells will be cleaned with a power washer; no masking or stripping will be done in the wheel wells. All access doors will be cleaned and painted.
- The layout will be done using 3M, Fine Line Tape in accordance with customer approved drawings. The final layout design will be approved prior to painting. After painting of the stripes, the tape will be pulled immediately (if the layout design allows), leaving a clean, crisp edge. Two stripe colors are included in the standard pricing. Each additional stripe color will be at additional cost.
- All FAA required exterior decals will be applied to the airframe. Additional decals and aircraft identification or logos not required by FAA regulations will be at a time and material cost.
- Flight controls will be operationally checked and balanced according to the manufacturer’s maintenance manual.
- Windows will be cleaned and exposed metal will be repolished such as tail skid, lower engine "smiles", prop spinner, clam shell doors, and cabin door handle. Areas that have been painted as delivered to us may be polished at additional cost. A final inspection for quality will be completed and the aircraft cleaned for final delivery. A logbook entry will be completed and all required documents will be checked and placed on board. A touch up paint kit will be provided.
- Entrance Door and Door Frame - The entrance door and the entrance door frame will be prepared for paint and painted using the fuselage base color.
- Baggage Door and Door Frame - The inside of the baggage door and the baggage door frame will be prepared for paint and painted to match the fuselage base color.
- Sand and repaint propellers and install decals.
The above steps are somewhat dependent upon aircraft type as we don’t normally strip and paint the props on a jet engined aircraft!
We also have the capabilities to create custom logos, paint layouts, and graphic layouts on your aircraft. This custom work will be quoted after the final design is completed.
